Health Benefits of Nature

What is one of my favorite ways to DE-STRESS and improve my health?

Going outdoors!

Being outside, specifically in nature, is my kind of “meditation”. It just does something to my soul. Winter is bitter & long here in Northeast Ohio, so we like to enjoy the nice weather as much as we can. The Fall season is very gorgeous here!

I always feel more balanced, relaxed & less stressed. But this isn’t my imagination: there are health benefits to nature and being outdoors!

Brandywine Fall at Cuyahoga Valley National Park in NE Ohio

Studies have linked time in nature with:

Decreased cortisol and stress levels
Increased positive mood & mental well being
Lowered blood pressure & heart rate
Improved anxiety & depression symptoms
Reduced negative emotions (anger, fear)
Improved immune function

When we’re outside, we’re exposed to:
Vitamin D (which acts as hormone in the body, critical for hormone regulation & immune system functioning)
Direct sunlight (vs. Indoor artficial lighting)
Better air quality
Phytoncides (compounds in trees) containing immune-boosting properties
A peaceful environment away from our busy go-go lifestyles, away from the electronics & technology

Many studies are done in Japan, where Forest Bathing is a popular activity. If only we can create that trend here in the US! Forest Bathing is when you literally just spend time relaxing in nature; laying, sitting, walking etc. to get the benefits of the environment.

So how can you get more of nature in your life??
You don’t have to be sporty or adventurous!

Some Ways to get into NATURE:

Eat a meal outside.
Make phone calls or work outside.
Take your work break out of the office.
Go for a walk, in a park or even just around the neighborhood.
Play with your dog or kids in the yard or park.
Relax: read, journal, meditate.
Play a recreational hobby or sport.
Check out events and outdoor activities loval to your area.

What is one of your favorite ways to enjoy the great outdoors?
